Gibson Les Paul Vintage Electric Guitar
Of all Gibson guitars, the Les Paul is the best known and best-selling model. Its design was based on the tireless quest for the ‘ultimate’ solid-body guitar by innovative electrical guitarist; none other than Mr. Les Paul himself. Introduced in 1952, the Les Paul electric guitar was iconic and became the pride-and-joy of thousands of guitarists around the world. Sadly the original Mr. Les Paul passed away on August 13, 2009, aged 94.
Originally there were two Les Paul models; the Goldtop and the Custom. Over the years however, the Les Paul became a household name and in the process of development, many offshoot models were created.
The Les Paul range could be distinguished from other Gibson guitars because the strings were always mounted on top of the guitar body, rather than through it and a variety of decorative finishes were available to the buyer. The Les Paul is quite a bulky guitar and the original was pretty weighty too. This is because the body was partly made of maple which is a very heavy wood.
Gibson was sold to a company called Norlin in 1969, they had it until 1987 and some consider that during this time the quality of the Gibson guitars declined. There is no doubt that they were very heavy, but some improvements were actually made to the Les Paul, because prior to the ‘Norlin era’ the Les Paul was known for having a neck joint that could snap easily. Norlin changed the Les Paul in a number of ways, but most notably, they strengthened the neck where it joined the headstock and swapped from the traditional mahogany one-piece to a maple three-piece design. This change was certainly for the better.
Gibson was the pioneer of the humbucker, which stops noise interference and the ‘Custom’ version of the Les Paul incorporated this into their 1957 version. As the years progressed, the variety of Les Paul models available were mass-produced with enough diversity to appeal to all target markets; from the very rich and famous, to the poor aspiring student.
As part of an elaborate marketing plan, Signature models of the Les Paul electric guitar were endorsed by famous guitarists , well known for playing the Les Paul and then released on sale to the public, these included Slash of Guns N’ Roses, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, Ace Frehley, Jimmy Page and Gary Moore.
Still in production, the Les Paul underwent a complete 21st century transformation with the truly futuristic computerized Les Paul, “the Robot”, closely followed by the interactive “Gibson Dark Fire”. These electric guitars are an incredible step into the next generation and promise to produce every imaginable guitar sound utilizing “Chameleon Tone Technology”.
