Fender Stratocaster Vintage Electric Guitar

The Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar is undoubtedly the most famous of all Fender guitars in the world. Some may say it is even THE most famous guitar in the world. The Fender Stratocaster was the result of Leo Fender’s innovative “Electric Spanish” design.

The Stratocaster, also affectionately known as simply ‘The Strat’, was first produced in 1954. It was launched in a cloud of marketing frenzy and has fully lived up to the hype ever since.

The Fender Stratocaster is without doubt a classic; the original version was made of ash, with a one-piece maple neck. It had 21 frets and appeared in a two-tone sunburst finish. The Strat featured three single coil pickups and Fender’s now infamous “Tremolo” patented vibrato system.

The three pickups each provided a unique and different tone; the neck pickup was mellower than the sharp bridge pickup and the middle pickup produced a bright, calming, mellow tone; something of a blend of the other two.

The Stratocaster was launched 3 years after the resounding success of the Fender Telecaster. It had a contemporary and sleek design, with beautiful contours, which fully summed up the edginess that this instrument was about to release on the world.

Unfortunately, when CBS took over the Fender Company in 1965 the quality of the Fender Stratocaster sadly declined. This was partly due to cutting costs, primarily by using less ‘rosewood’ in the necks.

The Fender Stratocaster is the most profoundly influential of all solid guitar designs and nowadays it has been upgraded and customised so often that it really couldn’t get much better. However, the vintage Fender Stratocaster’s are still worth a fortune, not just for their notoriety, but also because some guitarists just prefer the sound, feel and timber of these original versions.

With the onslaught of interactive video games, such as Electronic Arts’ Rock Band, electric guitars are very much in vogue. Fender has licensed the Stratocaster to appear as a replicated guitar controller for use in this game.

The Fender Stratocaster is still in production and has also had many reproductions over the years, by many different companies around the world.

The most recent addition to the Stratocaster dynasty was recently released this year; The 2009 Limited Edition American Standard Stratocaster which comes in three finishes; Surf Green, Daphne Blue and Fiesta Red. It also has a rosewood fretboard with 22 jumbo-sized frets.
