Fender Mustang Vintage Electric Guitar
The Fender Mustang Electric Guitar was introduced in 1964 as a beginner’s model to fit in line with Fender’s other two student models; the Musicmaster and Duo-Sonic. It was available with both a 24inch (full-size) and 22.5inch (3/4 Size) scale length. The Mustang may have been designed as just another student guitar but it was never as basic as the Musicmaster or Duo-Sonic. It had a slightly offset waist and a much more sophisticated range of features, including a new vibrato unit with a floating bridge that moved backwards and forwards when the unit was activated. It also had two single-coil pickups angled for optimum bass and treble response.
The original Fender Mustang body was made of poplar or mahogany wood and was available in three color finishes; Red, White and Blue. The Blue and Red Mustang’s came with white pearlescent pickguards, while the White Mustang came with a red tortoise-pearl pickguard. The neck was made of maple with a rosewood fingerboard.
In 1965 the Mustang was re-equipped with a bigger headstock and a few other minor changes including the introduction of F-key tuners with plastic pegs.
In 1969 the ‘Competition’ Mustang was introduced, which is in essence just another Mustang with three racing stripes painted across the front body of the guitar. The red finish came with cream stripes, the blue finish came with light blue stripes and the orange finish came with dark orange stripes. There were also a few ‘Left-handed’ Competition Mustangs made to special-order during this time. These completely replaced the original Mustangs, which were discontinued in 1970.
All the Mustangs manufactured in the mid seventies had an Ash body, which is a pretty heavy-weight wood, meaning many of the Mustangs of this time may weigh quite a lot more than the original Fender Mustangs.
The American Fender Mustangs were completely discontinued by 1982, but over the years, the Fender Mustang gathered something of a cult following. World renowned musicians including David Byrne, Kurt Cobain, Kelly Jones, Norah Jones and Patti Smith were all big fans of the Fender Mustang.
The Japanese market for Fender Mustangs had the highest demand in the world, due in part to the fame of a Japanese musician called ‘Char’, who was renowned for playing a blue one in the seventies. This brought a huge following of Japanese fans and encouraged the Japanese Mustang market to flourish. The Japanese brought out a reissue ‘69 Mustang in the late eighties available in Vintage White and Sonic Blue. It is made of basswood, which unfortunately has a bad reputation in guitar making and as such slightly decreases the value of this reissue Mustang, which is really not held in great regard but would be ok for a student to begin learning on.
