Gibson SG Electric Guitar
The Les Paul may have been the most well-known of all Gibson guitars but it was also the prototype for many other electric guitars too. The SG range of guitars in fact stemmed from the original Les Paul version.
Mr. Les Paul had a contract with Gibson in order to use his name to endorse the “Les Paul” range. When his contract ran out it was not renewed and over time his name disappeared from the headstocks and catalogues and the Les Paul range was eventually reclassified as the “SG” range, which stands for “Solid Guitar”. It was rumoured that the original Les Paul took a personal dislike to the design of the classic SG and that is part of the reason his contract was never renewed.
The “Classic” SG shape has a thinner profile and sharp ‘devil horn’ like cutaways, providing easier access to the upper frets. This thin-bodied guitar was certainly lighter and less bulky than the 1950’s style Les Pauls, but it also had a very different tone. Sometimes the SG can feel a bit "top heavy" because its Mahogany body is pretty light in comparison to its Maple headstock.
The introduction of the SG range was dubbed “An exciting new approach to the solid body guitar” and it was advertised as having the "fastest neck in the world". It wasn’t a really big seller mostly due to the changing musical tastes of that generation, but the SG range stood the test of time and to this day is still in production.
Over the years there have been quite a number of models in the SG family. The Gibson Melody Maker was one of them, as was the SG Junior for budget cautious beginners and the SG Special was a transition guitar somewhere between the SG Junior and SG Standard.
Some SG models were given a vibrato unit which had a hinged arm that was pulled from side to side; it was later replaced by a Vibrola unit with a an up and down action for ease of use. The configurations of the SG pickups were just like the original Les Pauls with humbuckers being used on the Standard and Custom SGs and single coil P-90s on the Specials and Juniors.
A bespoke SG once belonging to Eric Clapton was sold to a private collector for half a million dollars. It was known as ‘The Fool’ after the artists that painted it in bright psychedelic colours, with the image of a naked nymph on the lower body.
