Gibson ES Series Vintage Electric Guitars
The Gibson ES Series of Electric Guitars consists of no fewer than twenty-five ES models. The ES stands for Electric Spanish, which helps distinguish them from the original lap-steel Hawaiian style guitars. All the ES guitars are hollow-body, sometimes known as ‘semi-hollow’ body by Gibson.
The ES-125 appeared in 1941, it was a basic design, with an archtop and hollow body. It had a single coil pickup in the neck and a sunburst finish.
The ES-5, introduced in 1949 was a “supreme electronic” version of the Gibson Classic L-5 acoustic. It featured three P-90 pickups with individual volume knobs. Three transducers gave it impressive amplification but it really didn’t sound that great unplugged. In 1953 a special “switchmaster” was designed for the ES-5, which allowed the user to easily select the pickup tone through a four-way selector switch.
The ES-335 was introduced in 1958 and was an instant hit due to its cleverly designed ability to merge the fabulous tones of a hollow-body guitar, with the non-interference and crisp efficiency of a solid-body guitar. The ES-335 had a thinness very similar to a solid-body, but its width and length were more like an archtop guitar and quite bulky. The ES-339 was released in 2007 in order to enhance the ES-335 by giving it a neater, more compact body, but without losing any of the fabulous tone and ease-of-use that players of the ES-335 loved so much.
The Gibson ES-339 is dubbed “the perfect semi-hollow guitar for solid-body players, which feels like a Les Paul but sounds like an ES-335”. The ES-339 is available in three vintage-style finishes—Antique Red, Antique Vintage Sunburst, and Light Carmel Burst. It is unquestionably a beautiful guitar with a touch of class and a price-tag to match.
Rusty Anderson, who has been playing electric guitar with Paul McCartney for the past eight years is a massive fan of the ES-335. He is quoted as saying "I like 335s because they have a cool midrange quality and they can do everything I want from a guitar,". He is not the only famous musician to love the Gibson ES Series; Chuck Berry and BB King were renowned for their love of these guitars as well.
The Gibson ES Series of electric guitars remains to this day, a perpetual favorite of guitarists into almost every style of music from jazz and blues to rock, country and punk.
